"People with diabetes are so varied. There's the 8-year-old kid going to school every day, versus the older gentleman who may be retired and barely gets out of his house. Consumer design takes that variability into account, but traditionally medical design does not. What people with diabetes really need and want are choices," says Cynthia Rice, head of new technology at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). "We applaud what DiabetesMine is doing, because it sheds light on this need."


Last year, creator of DiabetesMine Amy Tenderich posted an Open Letter to Steve Jobs, calling for the gurus of consumer design to help revolutionize design of diabetes devices. In the weeks and months that followed, numerous individuals and organizations came forward with compelling new prototypes, designs, and ideas. These included new concepts for glucose meters, insulin pumps, lancing devices (for testing blood glucose), devices for transporting medical records or tracking glucose results, diabetes supply carry cases and more.


This year, the official competition is open to anyone passionate about diabetes and product design. "Whether you're a pharma R&D pro, an independent engineer, a design student or an enterprising patient, we want to hear from you," Tenderich says. "Remember, good design can be applied to anything, even something as 'low-tech' as a special container for disposing of used glucose test strips. Let the innovation begin!"


Submissions are accepted in the form of a 2-minute video to be uploaded to the DiabetesMine YouTube channel, or a 2-3 page written "elevator pitch" plus supporting graphics. The deadline for submissions has been extended to midnight PST on Monday, June 16, 2008. Winners will be announced on Friday, June 20, 2008.

Young Woman Returns Home to Discover Family, Self

For every child that goes away to college, there is a readjustment as they come home since leaving. Many new students become radically different people or so they seem and both parents and children are forced to adjust. In the new book Victorias Nest: Sequel to Prairie Preacher (published by iUniverse) by P.J. Hoge, Victoria Pepper Schroeder returns home for a funeral as a very different woman.


Megan was a lot of fun but a pretty straight shooter. She was six years older than Victoria and always seemed to have it together. Of course, why wouldnt she? She had an Ozzie and Harriet life, not at all like hers. Her own life was more like the Twilight Zone. She didnt think Megan would rat on her but she would probably give her a heck of lecture if she knew about last night. Victoria wasnt in the mood for another lecture. After all, she would be spending the weekend at home. She would be talked at enough.


Of course, the charged atmosphere of a funeral doesnt make for peaceful reintegration. Pepper clashes with her brothers and her parents until she begins to see them as people, instead of family. As she helps out around the homestead, helping with milking the cows and at her fathers mechanic shop. It is through this mechanism that Peppers perception of her parents changes, and their perception of her.


While at home in North Dakota, Pepper also reacquaints herself with Uncle Byron Ellison, her familys pastor. When more hardship piles atop the funeral and love begins to confuse her, Pepper draws solace from Uncle Byrons advice, learning about herself, the finality of death and forgiveness of bad behavior. Full of both laughter and tears, Victorias Nest is a heartwarming novel of loss and discovery.

Bay Area Doctor Invests in Rising Asian American Startup Called Jackfroot By 3 Young College Graduates

Last year if you were to do a Google search for Asian American entertainment, a multitude of unrelated sites and YouTube channels were all you could find. This was a common and increasingly frustrating occurrence for three friends who simply wanted to hear the newest music from D-Pryde, watch the latest JustKiddingFilms video, or figure out what the next movie Justin Lin was directing is. That's where Jackfroot comes in.


We just wanted a place where everything could be found easily. It was always a challenge to find information on Asian American entertainment. This is our way of taking small steps to changing the media landscape, says co-founder Ky Truong.


With that vision and purpose, in May 2010, 3 college graduates from San Jose State University named Davian Nguyen, Ky Truong, and Cameron Voly created Jackfroot.com - a new website that aims to be the central source for all things related to Asian American entertainment and culture. The origins of the name are two fold such that there is a popular Asian fruit called jackfruit and the creators wanted to stay rooted in Asian culture. Thus, the name Jackfroot was created.


Were here to support those who have a passion for what they do in arts and entertainment. We want our site to be a home where new and upcoming artists can showcase their talent. We also want to make it easier for fans to follow news on all established artists and talents. It comes down to having a dream and following your passion. After launching on June 14th of this year, Jackfroot has gained a huge following with an increasingly large buzz. Within a short time span, the website has climbed in website popularity faster than the founders expected.


The Jackfroot team set a goal to break into the top 1 million ranked websites worldwide within 6 months a task they accomplished in less than 3 months. By early November, they have impressed readers by breaking into the top 250,000 globally ranked websites and are still continuing to grow.

Three months after the launch, Jackfroot was contacted by Dr. Currie Lee, an anesthesiologist and pain management physician from San Leandro, who quickly took interest in the blossoming website. After a few meetings, they signed what could be the biggest deal of their lives. These guys showed me that they have the hunger and passion to succeed as young entrepreneurs, says Dr. Lee.

The Georgian Bay marina now has 55 boat slips and, while many are still rented seasonally, Halls Cottage Resort now has 7 dedicated transient slips for boats cruising in the Honey Harbour area. In the past the marina was restricted to a maximum boat length of 35. Now with the new dock configuration it can now accept transient yachts up to 50 or larger. There is 6 feet water depth at the transient docks so for most power boats this is more than adequate.


Halls Cottage Resort plans to resume adding more docks this fall, once the summer rush is over. The marina operation at the resort offers some onsite marine repairs. Shopping and restaurants are very close to the resort, situated in the centre of Honey Harbour. We wanted to expand from our cottage rental business into a property offering a broader range of tourism services, and in Georgian Bay, that includes catering to both seasonal and transient boaters, says Rick Vanderwal, who owns and operates the business along with his wife Dianne. While we build onto our cottage resort rental business every year by adding new cottage accommodations, we now are also focused on expanding and improving our marina facility, adds Diane Vanderwal.

Despite The Economy, Father's Day Is Recession Proof -- We Shower Moms With Gifts On Mother's Day, But Don't Be Fooled, IBISWorld Reveals Retailers Will Still Reap $11 Billion For Father's Day Gifts

In economic terms, IBISWorld expects the average per capita spending on Father's Day to be in the range of $ 27.60 in 2008, down slightly from $ 28.97 last year, which is indicative of consumer spending while we are in the midst of a sluggish and unpredictable economy.


"When it comes to putting a smile on Dad's face, in many cases, spending quality time with Dad beats gift giving," said Senior Analyst George Van Horn of IBISWorld. "However, that is not to say there will not be plenty of gift giving on Father's Day. Moms and the kids still buy an array of gifts for Father's Day. And what is interesting is that gifts for Father's Day cover a wider range of items than what we typically buy for Moms on Mother's Day." Following are some of the top gift picks for 2008:


Whipping Up A Feast For Dad - "The cost for outings with Dads is expected to be $ 2.42 billion this year, representing 22 percent of the total being spent on Father's Day. And the trend is expected to continue," said Mr. Van Horn, with IBISWorld estimating that proportion will rise to 25 percent next year." He added, "Whether taking Dad for a drive, enjoying dinner at a family-friendly restaurant, or preparing a feast at home, it seems that despite traffic and high gasoline prices, Father's Day is still a popular day to get Dad off the sofa and out of the house, as well as treating him like a king."


Spending On New Clothing - This year, the retail outlet of choice is the department store, where 28 percent of Father's Day gifts are purchased, followed by specialty stores (such as electronics retailers) with a 24.3 percent share, and discount stores, which capture 23.5 percent of the Father's Day gift spending.


"Retailers can expect consumers to outlay a serious $ 1.45 billion this Father's Day on updating Dad's wardrobe, and most of us will buy him an item from a department or discount store," said Mr. Van Horn. "But the news is not good for specialty clothing stores, because, only six percent of Father's Day gifts will be purchased from specialty clothing outlets."


Gadgets Galore - Incorporating everything from flat screen TVs for super spoiled Dads to MP3 players, digital cameras, DVD players, wireless home networking devices and computers, as well as a Blackberry or an Apple iPhone, and all the accessories that go with these devices, all things electronic are expected to be a big hit this Father's Day, with spending in this sector expected to reach $ 1.32 billion, or an estimaated12 percent of all gifts given.


"We are seeing a convergence between home computing and consumer electronics applications, as well as more sophisticated electronic equipment for cars, such as portable GPS devices, digital audio and DVD players," said Mr. Van Horn. "As a result, plenty of kids with cash will buy their Dad the latest gadget, or update his old-fashioned technology with something much smarter this Father's Day."

"Every year an increasing number, and wider variety of stores, are offering gift vouchers, which will account for 11.8 percent of Father's Day spending this year. Banks and individual retailers offer the same convenience by issuing gift cards loaded with denominations ranging from $ 25 to $ 500."


Greeting Cards - Despite the growing popularity of e-cards, IBISWorld predicts the greeting card sector will generate $ 770 million from Father's Day spending this year - with Hallmark holding onto the number one spot as our card of choice.


Old Favorites - Sporting and leisure goods will also generate $ 770 million in sales this Father's Day, while $ 748 million will be spent on tools and small appliances. "Mom and the kids will spend a solid $ 605 million on home improvement items and gardening tools for 'DIY' dads," said Mr. Van Horn. "And you cannot beat a good book or CD for Dad if all other inspirations fail, he added, expecting $ 594 million will be spent on these types of gifts this Father's Day."

Hackman Capital Announces the Sale of Florence Industrial Center

Hackman Capital, a private-held real estate investment firm located in Los Angeles, California, announced today that Otis Elevator of Farmington, Connecticut purchased the property owned by its affiliate at 1500 Range Way, in Florence, South Carolina. Florence Industrial Center, a 423,581 square-foot, class-A industrial facility, once occupied by Maytag, is situated on 49 acres and also includes 35 acres of vacant, interstate frontage land.


John Ticon and Edward Kercher of Cushman Wakefield in Charleston, South Carolina represented Otis Elevator in the recent transaction, while Randy Stump of The Stump Corporation, represented the Hackman affiliate.


"Adjacent to Interstate 95 and in close proximity to deep-water seaports, Florence Industrial Center offers Otis a prime Southeastern location and first-rate building amenities for manufacturing and distribution," said Michael Hackman, founder and CEO of Hackman Capital.


Hackman Capital renovated and completely rebranded the property in June of 2009, after selling and removing specialized Maytag equipmentapproximately 100 pieceswhich they acquired, along with the real estate, as part of the initial bundled transaction. "We then launched an aggressive marketing campaign designed to attract national companies to the area," said Hackman. The campaign not only touted key building features, Hackman explained, but also promoted Florence's incomparable accessibility and pro-business community.


Otis Elevator, the world's leading manufacturer of elevators, escalators and moving walkways, was the ideal candidate.


Otis completed a fee-in-lieu-of (FILO) payment agreement with Florence County, in an economic development project known as Project Rosebud, last month, in which the county agreed to dramatically reduce Otis' property taxes over the next 30 years.


For its part, the company is contracted to bring at least 360 jobs with an average wage of $ 25 per hour to the site and invest a minimum of $ 40 million in capital. If the company doesn't meet those benchmarks in the prescribed amount of time the local incentives agreement will be wholly or partially cancelled.


Beyond the tax rate reduction, an additional incentive offers Otis a $ 1,000 cash grant from the county for every Florence County resident who is employed at the site for at least three years up until December 31, 2016. That grant for up to 400 employees means a potential local grant of $ 400,000. The average salary of the employees counted must also be $ 25/hour, although that can include bonuses.


The 158-year-old company, which employs 61,000 people and has local roots in more than 200 countries and territories, has not yet shared specific details. However, Otis plans to use Florence Industrial Center as a manufacturing site and also expects to build a tall testing tower there. Jobs will come from Otis operations in other U.S. cities, and in Mexico, according to Florence County Economic Development Corporation officials, who anticipate a formal announcement from Otis later this month.

Applications for .Jobs domain names can now be submitted at EnCirca, an ICANN-accredited registrar for .Jobs. The Start-up Period for .jobs officially began at 2:30 p.m. PST on Sunday, June 19, 2005.

This benefits companies who have distributed HR departments based on local or divisional requirements. Companies can also register common abbreviations or acronyms for their companies.


During the start-up phase, all companies should make sure to secure their legal trade names (also known as Service Marks) prior to the first-come, first-served operations commencing in September, 2005. Companies worldwide are eligible during this phase.

Peter Desberg & Jeffrey Davis Challenge New York to Show Me the Funny! at Barnes & Noble Humor Writing Workshop & Book Signing

Authors Desberg and Davis, comedy writers in their own right, will hold a special workshop and book signing event in which they challenge the audience to Show Me the Funny! on Thursday, July 14th at the Barnes & Noble bookstore on 86th Street & Lexington Avenue in Manhattan.


Attendees will enjoy a unique glimpse into the intelligent and quirky inner workings of the comedic mind as Desberg and Davis share their experience interviewing 28 top comedy screenwriters from the revered figures of television's Golden Age to today's favorite movie and TV writers. The authors will reveal behind-the-scenes devices and tricks of the trade illuminating the creative process of writers from such shows as Gilligans Island, Modern Family, Everybody Loves Raymond, Cheers, Frasier and more. Attendees will also be treated to legendary Hollywood stories.


As a Big Apple exclusive, Desberg and Davis will also be sharing comedy writing tips and techniques with the audience, and accepting attendees own submissions of the comedic premise detailed in the book. Several attendees who come prepared to the event with a pitch will have the opportunity to present it. Attendees who purchase a book exclusively at the event can also submit their pitches within two weeks to the authors via email for consideration. About the Authors of Show Me the Funny!


One out of every 150 people in America bought a copy of a joke book that Peter Desberg has written. Unfortunately, Scholastic sold the most popular one for $ 1 each, so he still has to work. Counting his five joke books, he has had twenty books published. In addition to this lucrative writing career, he is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in the area of stage fright. He has worked with many top stand-up comedians, who are regularly confronted with massive cases of flop sweat. He also has been moonlighting as a full professor at California State University Dominguez Hills for over thirty years. He has to be a humor expert because he has a daughter who is about to turn twenty-one.


Jeffrey Davis's earliest memories are of sitting around the writers' table at Nate & Al's Delicatessen, where his father and his comedy writer cronies gathered over corn beef and Doctor Brown's Cream Soda, told war stories, and tried to fix third acts. He began his own career writing jokes for Thicke of the Night. Among his situation comedy credits are Love Boat, House Calls with Lynn Redgrave, Give Me a Break, Diff'rent Strokes, and Night Court. He has also written for such shows as America's Funniest People, America's Funniest Home Videos, and Small Wonder, and has had film projects developed by Bette Midler's All Girl Productions, among others. His plays have been produced in New York and Los Angeles. His most recently published play is Speed Dating 101. He is the Screenwriting Department Chair and associate professor of film and TV writing at Loyola Marymount University. His one night of stand-up at the Comedy Store convinced him that he should stay permanently seated at his desk.
